How to read the exchange board
- You are giving the shop USD, so look at USD ALIŞ / BUY: the shop is buying your dollars.
- Before handing over cash ask: “100 dolar için net kaç TL?” — How many lira net for $100?
- Ask “Komisyon var mı?” — Is there a commission?
- Count the TRY at the counter. Avoid damaged USD notes.
- For card purchases, if a terminal offers USD vs TRY, choose TRY to avoid dynamic currency conversion.

Hagia Sophia Visiting Area €25 standard
Recommendation: buy the €25 Visiting Area ticket at the ticket office. DEM’s official public online shop currently promotes the €50 Complete Experience combo (mosque visiting area + separate history/experience museum).
Nakkaş Cistern Free / ask staff
Small Byzantine cistern beneath Nakkaş. Access is through the rug shop; recent local listings/reviews report free entry, though access can depend on the shop.
Gülhane Cistern / Gülhane Sanat Free
Official IBB cultural venue; 10:00–18:00 except Monday.
Şehir Hatları Short Bosphorus Tour 14:40 · ₺340 foreign fare
Buy at the official Eminönü pier. Arrive 20–25 minutes early and recheck the official timetable before committing to last-minute shopping.

Goal: authentic Turkish/Ottoman food plus a quick “this is Istanbul” nighttime walk afterward.
1) Matbah Ottoman Palace Cuisine Best fit
Historic Ottoman palace-style dishes in Sultanahmet, very close to Hagia Sophia. Best combination of special-occasion meal + landmark location.
2) Deraliye Ottoman alternative
Another serious Ottoman palace-cuisine option, open later and very convenient to Sultanahmet.
3) Balıkçı Sabahattin Best if seafood
Traditional Istanbul fish-house experience in a historic setting. Order meze for the table, then fresh fish; confirm fish price/weight before cooking.
If the day starts slipping
- Never cut Hagia Sophia. It’s a must now.
- If you’re behind before noon, shorten Nakkaş Cistern or lunch rather than Hagia Sophia.
- At 13:45, start moving toward Eminönü even if shopping isn’t finished. The 14:40 ferry is the biggest fixed daytime deadline.
- If the ferry runs late, Gülhane Cistern is the first thing to cut; it closes at 18:00.
- If traffic back from Şişli looks ugly after your hotel reset, leave early. Missing 15 minutes of rest is better than making your friends wait.
